Golf Tips on How to Work on Your Short Game Efficiently

Making progress on your short game is the fastest way to lower your scores and reach your goals on the golf course. However, too many golfers spend time in the short game practice area but they don’t have a specific plan and much of that time goes wasted. You want to make sure you are getting the most out of your practice time, and the best way to do that is to have a specific plan for your practice before you go. A smart practice plan will improve the efficiency of your efforts and ensure that you are making good progress on your short game.

The tips below can be used to help shape your practice plan –

  • Spend half of your time on putting. Once you figure out how much time you are going to spend on a certain day working on your short game, divide that time in half to start setting your plan. Half of your time should be spend on putting, while the other half is spread around among chipping, pitching, and sand play. Most golfers far underestimate how much time they need to spend practicing their putting, so using this 50/50 method will make sure you hit enough putts to improve your touch.
  • Create realistic situations. Good practice replicates the conditions found on the golf course as accurately as possible. That means giving yourself not just perfect lies when chipping and pitching, but also putting the ball in some poor lies like you might find on the course. A good way to do this is to simply toss a few golf balls into the practice chipping area and play them as they lie instead of placing them on top of the grass one by one.
  • Always pick targets. The short game is very target oriented – just as much as the long game. With that in mind, make sure you are picking targets for each one of your practice shots just like you would on the course. Hitting just five shots where you pick good targets is going to be more beneficial to your game than hitting 15 shots without a purpose or direction. Go through your pre-shot routine, pick a specific target, and execute each shot to the best of your ability. This approach will benefit you greatly when you head back out to the course and test the progress you have made.
